Our 9th Creative Summer!

index

In each one-week session, Pleiades' Palette offers a variety of techniques: drawing, painting, sewing, and mixed media. Our emphasis is on fun and creativity. Morning and afternoon snacks are provided. Each week will end with a show and celebration of the children's artwork.

Pleiades' Palette is taught by Laura Raboff and Janet Lipkin.  Laura is an artist and art teacher at Prospect Sierra School. Janet is an artist and art teacher at Tehiyah Day School.

Wild, Wiggly, Wonderful Westwood

Vivienne Westwood is a major fashion designer based in London. She is innovative and always experimenting. She invented punk, the tube skirt, slashed jeans and frayed sweaters. In this exciting week campers will create an argyle sock doll and a crazy cut bag from jeans. The campers will also print and design a squiggly tube dress. Not even the wildest imaginations can foresee the creations that will be invented this week.

Dolls: Bringing Home the World

Local artist Karen Mckie makes one-of-a-kind dolls layered with history. Each doll has a distinctive personality. Inspired by Karen, campers will sew and construct their own dolls. Using natural materials and fabrics from around the world campers will make a family of dolls. Sparked by the art of Ndebele women of South Africa they will paint bold graphic designs on tin house forms and invent and paint their own fabric designs.

Session 3:
June 29 - July 2, 9:00 am - 3:00 pm
Ages 7-13 | Tehiyah Day School, 2603 Tassajara Ave, El Cerrito

Twirling Mirrors ~ Dancing Nanas

With mosaics of shimmering mirrors Niki de Saint Phalle created giant Nanas (dancing figures) for sculpture parks and museums around the world. Her spirit was as big and bold as her sculptures. The campers will make tile and mirrored mosaics with fanciful images. With bold colors and soft fleece they will sew large cozy Nana dolls. Campers will draw colorful organic drawings inspired by Niki’s exuberant free spirit.

Session 4: (Four-day week with longer hours)
July 6 - 9, 9:00 am - 4:30 pm
Ages 7-13 | Tehiyah Day School, 2603 Tassajara Ave, El Cerrito

The Velvet Village
Quilt maker Rosie Lee Tompkins, a Richmond resident was internationally renowned. Her boldly designed, luscious quilts were assemblages of irregular rectangles, strips and squares. Inspired by Rosie’s satin and velvet fabrics, campers will sew a patchwork quilt. With multi-color stitches campers will create small stuffed animals. They will construct and paint a wooden bed for their sleepy animals
